The event brought together a panel of leading housing professionals to provide an in-depth analysis of homelessness and a look at the proactive efforts being made in homelessness prevention.
The audience had the unique opportunity to listen to and engage with our panel of industry experts, which included:
Gail McLaughlin, Homeless Services Manager, Ark Housing
Clara Robinson, Policy and Research Manager, NIFHA
Mark Bailie, Head of Policy and Programmes, Homeless Connect
Jennifer Hawthorne, Director of Housing Services, Housing Executive
Key Discussions and Insights
The panel tackled the current challenges within the homelessness sector in Belfast, exploring the direct responses being implemented and highlighting best practice approaches for prevention and support. A central takeaway from the discussion was the urgent need to build more houses to meet the ever-increasing demand.
Each panel member provided valuable insights from their respective fields:
Gail McLaughlin of Ark Housing highlighted how the restructuring of Ark’s Floating Support Service is a direct response to the rising challenges in the city. Since 2020, the team has assisted over 600 families and continues to support the 41 families living in Ark's temporary accommodation.
Jennifer Hawthorne of the Housing Executive explained the new strategies and initiatives being implemented to address the changing landscape of homelessness. This includes greater investment in the "complex lives" model and new cross-sectoral initiatives designed to assist young people leaving the care system.
Mark Bailie from Homeless Connect emphasized the vital importance of recognizing the efforts and dedication of frontline service providers. He stressed that while their work might not always be publicized, the commitment of these professionals is a crucial, daily effort that should never be underestimated.
Clara Robinson of NIFHA underscored how the Federation continually engages with political representatives, using data and statistics to stress the need for greater housing provision. She noted the importance of consistently presenting these facts to our elected representatives to maintain focus on the issue.
A Message of Hope and Action
The event was a powerful opportunity for housing professionals to engage directly with the public, sharing details of their efforts to address the growing crisis. The discussion concluded with a poignant quote from Julie Steele, Engagement and External Affairs Manager at the Chartered Institute of Housing:
"The challenge is vast, requiring funding for homes and support services. Still, by refocusing our efforts on helping one person in need, we can initiate a chain reaction of positive change. Let's celebrate the small victories, knowing that each life transformed today sets the stage for the next one, until we can collectively tackle the mountain and make the systemic changes needed to turn the tide on homelessness once and for all."
A very big thank you to the team at Feile an Phobhail for permitting us to have this event as part of the Summer School, and to our panel of industry professionals for sharing their insights, knowledge, and expertise.
